Astronomy can feel like an overwhelming subject, but Night Sky Naturalist Emara Streich is passionate about simplifying key concepts to make the night sky more accessible to everyone!
Join us after work on Wednesday, January 29th, as we head to the Dark Sky Preserve in Torrance Barrens, located just a two-hour drive north of Toronto. Upon arrival, Emara will guide us through a fascinating two-hour lesson on the stars above and the celestial structures they form. We've chosen this date because it's a full moon, which will offer the perfect conditions for unobstructed views of the sky. Feel free to ask Emara any questions you have—she'll be more than happy to share her knowledge!
17:50 - Meet at the Petro Canada near Keele Station
18:00 - Begin drive. Please note that we leave dead on time and cannot wait for latecomers. Make sure you leave plenty of time so you don't get left behind!
20:30 - Arrive at Torrance Barrens for a lesson on the constellations and stargazing
22:30 - Leave Torrance Barrens
00:30 - Return to Keele Station
This custom map is georeferenced, meaning it will show you where you are on the map in the right software and lays out the rough path that we’ll be following. It’s opened with the Avenza app which must be downloaded and installed in advance of the adventure.
You should also download the What3words app - this makes it easy to share and find locations in the unlikely event that you get lost.
Winter clothing
We'll be outside on what's potentially a very cold night so dress in warm layers and wear all your cosiest clothing!
A hot drink is also encouraged as we will be standing outside.
