An Ultra Marathon is anything greater than marathon distance (42.2km). We thought it would be fun to attempt an Ultra Hike 😈
We'll be hiking along the Martin Goodman Trail along Lake Ontario from sunrise to sunset, covering as much distance as we possibly can with a goal of ending up at Burlington by sunset.
We’ll start from High Park at 06:37, aiming to cover as much distance as we can along the waterfront until sunset at 19:58. The goal is to reach the iconic Brant Street Pier in Burlington, which is about 54 km away, testing our endurance and teamwork throughout the day.
If you find it's all too much, we've planned a route with easy access to GO Train stations for an easy exit.
Make no mistake, this will be an extremely challenging day but one you can tackle in a safe way and all along some of the easiest terrain you can find. It's going to be a blast!
If you have any questions about your ability to take this on, please message us on the Discord.
The total length will be approximately 54km depending on where you join us, the number of detours we take and if you tap out prematurely! Were it not for the distance, this would be an extremely easy hike. We'll be on pavement almost the whole time, elevation is next to nil and there are plenty of spots along the way to fuel up.
There are transit options throughout our route so, if you're finding it all a bit much you'll have options to tap out every few km along the trail. It's a surprisingly pretty route that takes us through some gorgeous neighbourhoods and alongside the lake for the majority of our time.
Once we arrive in Burlington we'll have a quick celebratory meal and drink before catching a GO Train back into town.
If you want to meet us anywhere other than High Park, let us know in the Discord Channel!
06:30 - Meet at the Bloor Street West/High Park Avenue entrance to High Park at the main North gates
06:37 - 19:58 - Hike to Burlington
20:00 - Have dinner in Burlington then catch the train back into town. The train goes as far as Union Station with stops along the way, costs $12 and takes approximately one hour.
This custom map is georeferenced, meaning it will show you where you are on the map in the right software and lays out the rough path that we’ll be following. It’s opened with the Avenza app which must be downloaded and installed in advance of the adventure.
You should also download the What3words app - this makes it easy to share and find locations in the unlikely event that you get lost.
Shoes
Hiking boots are strongly recommended for this trip.
Clothing packing list
Dress according to the weather!
First Aid
Misc
Pack at least a litre of water for the hike - there should be opportunities to replenish along the way.
There will be plenty of places to stop along the way for lunch or snacks.
Food and drink is not provided by Wilderness Union.
Hiking injuries - Wear appropriate footwear (ankle high hiking boots) and hike within your abilities. If you need extra support, bring hiking poles.
This is an extremely long hike and you shouldn't push yourself beyond your abilities. It is your responsibility to tap out if and when you need to. Please note that you may have to get back to Toronto on your own if you don't make it to the end.
We like to share some of the indigenous background of the areas we visit because these territories have rich histories that are easy to overlook. Indigenous communities have a connection to and respect for the land that has largely been lost since European settlement. As we strive to form a deeper connection with the land, we have much to learn from these communities. You can use the Native Land map to learn more about these areas.
Toronto has a particularly long and varied indigenous history, groups who maintain connections to the land include:
