Come and learn about the stars above and the greater cosmos that we all share.
During this program, you'll gain confidence identifying key constellations, planets, and feel more connected to the night sky. With each constellation we observe, you'll learn about some of the mythologies associated with them! If we're lucky, we may even catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights. We will be fortunate enough to stargaze in a location with minimal light pollution for optimal night time viewing. We'll discuss some of the issues associated with light pollution beyond impeding our ability to stargaze.
You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for our closest celestial companion, the Moon; it made us who we are today, in many ways that science is just beginning to understand. We simply wouldn't be here today without it! We'll also explore topics including full Moon names as a means of timekeeping, eclipses, moons of other planets, and more! Peer into a pair of binoculars to get a closer look at some of the unique lunar surface features!
Astronomy can feel like an overwhelming field to learn about, but Night Sky Naturalist Emara Streich is passionate about breaking down some key concepts to make it feel more accessible for everyone!

About our expert - Emara Streich: Former WU member, Night Sky Naturalist and graduate of Fanshawe College's Adventure Expeditions & Interpretive Leadership program, is passionate about the Eco-Tourism industry. She spent several years promoting sustainable tourism in the Georgian Bay area, collaborating with local businesses and partners to develop adventure tourism experiences. Astronomy has always been of particular interest to her, and if there is a full moon or a meteor shower, you can find her outside marvelling at these celestial wonders. She has worked with Muskoka Tourism on their "Home of the Stars" program, which brought visitors to Muskoka from all over the GTA during tourism's shoulder season to learn about the night sky!
