It's perfectly natural to feel a little freaked out about animals when camping. Whether you're preparing for your first night sleeping outdoors or you're a seasoned backcountry explorer, we've all become convinced at some point that the mouse scratching outside the tent is a terrifying beast of the night.
You've probably heard that we're a much greater risk to bears than they are to us but unless you hear it from one of Ontario's foremost experts on bear safety, you're not going to believe it. Well, good news, because that's exactly who we have joining us to talk about wildlife safety!
Micheline is a Wildlife Biologist with Ontario Parks. She's worked her entire career to reduce and mitigate human-wildlife conflict, and promote peaceful coexistence. Micheline has huge experience handling many species of wildlife including bears, moose and deer. Micheline is an instructor for Black Bear Encounter Safety, Bear Spray, and Human-Wildlife Conflict Management.
In this online session, we'll learn from Micheline's practical experience with bears, moose and wolves and cover:
- General wildlife safety and etiquette
- Black Bear Encounters, moose encounters, wolf/coyote encounters
- Proper wildlife attractant management
- How to observe wildlife without harassing them
- Best practices for human-wildlife coexistence
By the end of it, you'll feel confident that you can safely spend time outdoors without worrying about animal danger and become a better guest of nature.
We're opening this session up to those who aren't yet members of Wilderness Union.
