Winter Activity Update

Reasons to Get Excited About Winter

After a huge dump of snow up North last weekend, it's looking like we're going to have an amazing season for winter sports. Here's what you've got to look forward to and, most importantly, when you can start doing it...

Skiing

The downhill ski resorts are opening up extra early this year. Mount St. Louis opens today, Friday 6th December and Blue Mountain opens on Saturday so you'll get a longer season this year.

For cross-country skiing, things are looking fantastic— Hardwood Ski is anticipating an early start to the season. After last year’s slow start, this is great news.

Skating

Toronto’s municipal rinks are now open, but the iconic destinations need a bit more time. Arrowhead’s forested skate trail should open in early January if temperatures cooperate (their XC ski tracks are already open!), and Muskoka’s Cranberry Bog Ice Trail is likely to be ready around the new year.

Hiking

You can hit the trails right now! Few things beat a fresh snowfall, especially this time of year when many are tempted to hibernate. It’s the perfect chance to enjoy some trails all to yourself.

Pro tip: Grab a pair of ice spikes now so you’re ready when you venture out. At Wilderness Union, we swear by the Kahtoola Exospikes—they pick up less snow than traditional microspikes, offer plenty of grip, and work great for trail running, too.
